UNHEARD SCREAMS // Heartwarming moments in refugee camps - Surviving on bare minimums and the first steps in building a new life after the floods

There are so many new experiences and knowledge that I can learn from this natural disaster (Flood) and this is about the struggle of life,rise from despair, togetherness, loyalty, and compassion. I managed to capture this experience while I was in the refugee camp, how I spent my daily time and shared compassion with everyone. There are some areas that were not affected by the flood but almost all of them received the impact and that was enough to open everyone's eyes.
Words that are easy to understand are words that come straight from the heart, tears broke out everywhere and I had to think hard about how I would convey it all here. Now it is Sunday, December 7 2025 and the flood waters have receded but still leave a very deep wound,the flood also brought a lot of mud so that now many village areas are filled with mud and some houses are even submerged by mud. This makes it very difficult for residents to clean it, especially when the mud has dried.
On November 29, 2025, the sun rose again to shine on the earth after more than a week of non-stop rain, and this made us even more enthusiastic to continue fighting in this desperate situation.
Honestly, it was very difficult to find clean water, let alone drinking water.Even to bathe we had to be willing to walk into the oil palm plantation to find it. Luckily there was an old well there, although the water in the well was also a little cloudy. This well was a very valuable gem for us at that time, besides bathing, the water in this well was also used by the refugees as a water source for washing clothes and washing dishes and various other important things.
Facing it alone is very difficult, but if you do it together, even difficult things will become easier, and this is the important thing that made me realize at that time.
Confusion, tiredness, panic, stress can all be seen from the expressions on each person's face. Men are tasked with looking for wood while women are responsible for cooking, and this is the meaning of differences to complement each other.
Daytime is our time to gather everything you need, because nighttime is our time to rest, especially since there's no internet or electricity, the lights go out completely, leaving only the silence and darkness of the night. There are actually many activities we can do to relieve this boredom, and sometimes we do.
On November 29, evacuees were advised not to return to their homes because the floodwaters had not fully receded and were still very dangerous. On December 2, my family and I finally returned home, not with joy, but with sadness when we saw our house in such disarray.
Where are the beautiful ornamental plants, where are the colorful flowers that decorated my yard, everything is gone and only remains the rubble of buildings and scattered rubbish, knee-deep mud and it makes me unable to bear to look at it, confused about where to start.
Daytime is the best time to start this repair, one by one we collect the trash and separate the items that are still good to be saved, time continues to pass and sweat continues to pour and at that time we have to focus on cleaning the inside of the house first.
Almost 95% of the house facilities were damaged, including cupboards, clothes, kitchen utensils and several other facilities, and even some important facilities were lost in the flood. I cannot confirm how high the water level is in my village, but according to some neighbors, the water level reached 3 meters and this can also be seen from the water marks on the walls of the house.
You can imagine for yourself how terrible the damage caused by this flood was. Our motorbike and even our car were also carried away by the flood current, but luckily we were able to find it, but it was already in a badly damaged condition.
I am very grateful that my house is still standing strong, I am very sad when I imagine the fate of our other brothers and sisters who have lost their homes, homes and even their families.Don't be too judgmental about life, because there are still many people above us and also many people below us, being grateful is the most important thing.There is still hope and I am very convinced of that. I think this year's flood in Aceh will be an important memory and history.
