I really wanted to find some new music for this week's Three Tune Tuesday, run by @ablaze (you can win SBI for joining in!). But in the end I've gone for Mode Selektor that we started listening to in 2009 when we first moved to Australia - or I moved back, with my English husband in tow. We were all of a sudden living very far from the UK both pschologically and physically, and we were missing living with people on the travellers sites (basically communal living in vehicles, sorta - long story) and were doing up a bus and living on some land owned by a friend of my Dad's.
I can't even remember where we first heard of this Berlin duo but as soon as we did we immediately bought two of their CD's - yeah yeah showing my age now - Happy Birthday and Hello Mom.
In my opinion German elektronika is the bomb and I remember clubbing in Berlin one summer and totally thinking the Germans had the genre totally down pat. I liked it alot more than the poppy rubbish that Australian mainstream were playing in the early 2000's that's for sure, and longed for the heavier bass drops and deeper dark house that my husband had got me into in the Uk. Mode Selektor, however, were fun. They're described online as 'wildly diverse, infused with exuberance and inspired by a slap of the absurd' - this first tune certainly has some of that absurdity to it.
I also love this one featuring Tommy Cash - the lyrics are great and it's totally catchy.
Who says study will get you work?
Who says school will get you class?
Who said that job will get you the cash?
Who said the loan will save your ass?
Who said money covers all the expenses?
Who said love will save the kids?
Who says forever is not divorce?
Who says your dream will get you a Porsche?
Who says that life is not death?
(Who) Who said wearin' brands is having style?
Who said that original is not fake?
(Who) Who said that those pills will get you high?
Who said that drugs will make you smile?
(Who) Who said that gas will get me the miles?
La-la-lah
They keep talkin' blah
I think one of the reasons I love them so much is that they are definitely just about mine and Jamie's mems - we had some really happy times to them. Unlike Orbital for him or Chemical Brothers for me, which have their own memories and flashbacks attached to them - parties, people, festivals, raves - Mode Selektor was just me and him playing really loud tunes and loving it. I can listen to the opening beats of this one even now and it'll make me smile and want to turn it up.
With Love,
