It's usually a time of massive change. When I was 27 I split from a long time obsession with a partner and took my 4 year old to Europe... Totally changed everything. It's one of those things that people talked about but I didn't understand really til after it happened. Maybe it's just part of usual cycle of life, moving out of 20s.
