It's kinda fun going through my old photos of Galicia and noting all the spots I haven't talked about. By the time we got to this part of the trip I wasn't keen on blogging about it much, having little time and moving quite fast. It's nice to record it now though, before I forget where I took all of these photos!

We'd been told about The Playa de las Catedrales from a young german couple we met in Nazare - they'd been sending us google pins as they'd travelled up the coast a few weeks before us. It's in the Lugo province near Burella and San Vicente de la Barquer.

To be honest, we found it lovely but less spectacular than some of the beaches we'd seen, and it was fairly touristy, so we didn't stay long. We also didn't plan our trip well, since low tide is the time to see it at it's best so you can properly walk the narrow corridors between the cliffs, cracks, caves and pass underrock arches.

Clearly we were absolutely missing out though - if you look for image of this place online, this is what you might see. And of course, it would have been much nicer on a sunny day with offshore winds too - but ain't that travel for you? You don't always find what you didn't know you were looking for. But damn - if only we had more time. I can imagine how stunning it would be at sunrise or sunset too! But look at all those footprints on the sand - I guess you'd be there with a lot of other people too!

There was a cool cave or two even at high tide though, so I guess it was worth the stop, even to stretch our legs and imagine what we were really missing out on.

We contented ourselves with a short walk on the beach and breakfast in the carpark, looking at the scenes from the top of the cliff. It's hard to imagine the scale of the archways I see on the internet with the relatively short cliffs I could see from the top. Trickery, I imagine. Honestly, I'm cynical in my older age. We've seen a lot of rock formations in our time. WE consoled ourselves by telling ourselves it was just another tourist trap.

It's funny what we tell ourselves to justify what we chose to visit and what we didn't, where we lingered and where we high tailed it from, escaping crowds and a lack of enthusiasm on our part. You can't see everything, do everything, I suppose, right?

But if you're driving past one day, do try to time it with the tides, and come back and tell me what you thought of the place. I'm definitely not saying it ain't worth a stop.
