After the hardcore dust tracks and insane climb to Montezuma Falls, we decided as a group a night and day of rest was in order, and headed the 20 km up the road to Lake MacImtosh and Lake Rosebury. One was too busy, as it was a popular fishing spot, but the other had room. Whilst we wouldn't get lakeside til the morning when some grey nomads moved their RV, it was just perfect - we had a fire and talked about the hell track we had all survived.
The lake itself is actually a man-made water reservoir and is fed by the dammed Mackintosh and Murchison rivers. Damming rivers has been controversial in Tassie's history, and I'll talk more on this later. The lake is stocked with trout from fisheries and wildlife, and is
surrounded by myrtle, sassafras and eucalypt. The reflections on the lake and surrounding mountain views are just stunning.
We also had a swim. I couldn't believe how insanely warm the lake was. I always expect lakes to be freezing but this wasn't at all. It was so good to wash away all the cortisol rush from the track.
In the morning the boys fished whilst the girls tidied up the cars. Pretty much everything had fallen off the shelves so I needed to secure things better and I also washed some clothes. It was going to be a beautiful day so it was a good opportunity to dry them.
Later the boys would drive off for a fish so Margie and I went for a SUP on the lake. She was at least ten years older than me and I admired her willingness to give something a go. She listened to my instructions to the letter and only fell in once. It was so beautifully picturesque and not a breath of wind. Tassie's beauty is just impossible sometimes!
When the boys came back Jamie actually strung a hammock between the trees and fell asleep. After all the hard work of the year, it was lovely to see him relaxed.
Angeline, Levi's sister, saw a black tiger snake in the bushes. She's from French Guana so dangerous animals aren't too terrifying for her but she did squeal. We have seen a lot of them on the track!
It was so nice to just chill for the day. The following days we would head to the coast then to the most magnificent drive and insane walk I've ever done, almost, but that's another story.
With Love,
