Okay, hands up. Who DOESN'T love a blowhole? It's one of those natural occurances that is mesmerizing and makes you go 'whoooooa', a little like lightening does. And just as my hubs stands at the window for hours looking at lightning, so too does he screech on the brakes and spin round a corner when he sees a sign marked 'blowhole'.
Look at him will ya? Isn't he cute? It just brings out the little boy in him. I had to just leave him be for half an hour staring at the water gushing up through the rocks. Although I must admit it was quite photogenic - although blue skies would have helped the water stand out more. And imagine a bigger swell too!
If you're driving down Tassie's east coast, you'll drive through Bicheno. Just look for a sign on the coast side that says 'blowhole' and you'll find it.
The other cool thing we saw was a seal colony. My phone has a 60x zoom and although the quality is awful, I could still make out that they were seals, not mermaids or rocks.
The thing is, other people love a blowhole too. Shows that travel photos can be decieving. Highly recommend you go early and you might miss the crowds. Still, it wasn't STonehenge so it wasn't too bad, and once people took their selfie, they moved on.
The rest of Bicheno is quite lovely. It's a good spot for fishing. At the boat ramp you'll see an old wall which I think used to lower boats down.
There's also a good fish and chip shop there, which is in all good coastal towns of course. In the mainstreet there's also everything else you'd need - pharmacy, bakery, supermarket, surfshop and so on.- even a couple of hipster cafes. There's quite a few historic buildings in town as well and looks like a bit of money is going in to maintaining them. We also spotted the surf breaks though it was a bit small and inconsistant to bother going out. Down by the harbour there were quite a few scuba divers suiting up as well.
Had to share this shot too - it's a kookaburra sitting between two gulls. Classic! Gotta love Tassie for random wildlife.
Although we were only passing through, Bicheno gave us enough of a vibe to want to come back one day for a bit longer.
With Love,
