Whilst some parts of Australia 'celebrated' and other 'mourned', we just had another day I suppose on January 26th, although we did quietly reflect 'on country' and I did get involved in a couple of quiet online arguments with flag wavers who decided it was a good day to be racist.
BUT ANYWAY LOOK AT THAT COASTLINE! That's better - aaah. Breath. We drove down to Kennett River on the Great Ocean Road with a few Land Rover mates. It's a fun road to drive along in an old - or a new - Landie. As it was a long weekend we saw all kinds of cars - a few Lambos too. There's money on that road, sometimes - often, these days. Not everyone can hang out in the back to make coffee and sandwiches though.
Kennett River is a lovely bay. There's not else much there - a general store, a caravan park, some houses. The bay is really protected - we swam too, as the water temperature is a balmy 19 degrees at the moment. It shouldn't be that warm, but it is.
We also walked around the corner to a beach I've never been to before. Our friend Mic told us about it because his Mum used to collect shells there and spend hours and hours there. When she died, the family spread her ashes there.
Mic had spent his childhood on that beach every summer, and in the Surf Life Saving club. I never realised - he lives inland now, and is ex army - there's a whole other life that happened after he joined the military, served in Afghanistan and various other places. He clearly loves it there - there's a lot of good memories for him.
If you do go past Kennet River, a top tip is to go round the back of the caravan park to feed the parrots. You might even see some koalas. It's a top tourist tip!
