I decided to trek home one sunny day after lecture. On my way, I saw one man who was barely well dressed. He looked hungry and was willing to do anything just to get money to buy food. When I got close, I didn’t wait for him to ask me for anything, it was obvious he needed help. So, I dipped my hand into my handbag and handed him the very last money left with me. It was enough to get him something to eat for that evening.
Unknown to me, he was just pretending to see if there were still compassionate people in the world. He looked at the note in his hand, then at me, and smiled. “You didn’t even ask who I am,” he said softly. I simply replied, “You looked like someone in need. That’s enough for me.”
He nodded and reached into his pocket, bringing out a small brown envelope. “Take this,” he said, handing it to me. I was confused. “Please, I can’t take anything from you,” I protested. But he insisted.
When I finally got home and opened the envelope, I found a neatly folded note and a key. The note read:
“Kindness opens doors. Go to the address below.”
The next day, curiosity pushed me to the address, it led to a small office building not far from campus. There, I met the same man again, this time neatly dressed and seated behind a large desk.
He smiled as I entered. “Welcome,” he said. “Yesterday, I was searching for someone to manage a youth foundation I’m starting, someone who still believes in humanity. You passed the test.”
I shouted "really" with joy as I realized that a simple act of compassion had opened a new chapter in my life. Truly, kindness is a door to somewhere, a place where goodness always finds its way back.
