The topic I learned is about Ethical Dilemmas. An ethical dilemma emerges when a person faces a situation necessitating a decision, with various options available, each involving a compromise of ethical principles. For an ethical dilemma to exist, three conditions must be met: the need for choice, availability of multiple courses of action, and inevitable ethical compromise regardless of the chosen path.

Distinguishing between ethics, values, morals, laws, and policies is crucial. Ethics are logical standards employed by groups to determine appropriate actions. Values represent cherished concepts, often accompanied by emotional attachment. Morals establish a behavioural code within relationships. Laws and policies introduce complexity, as social workers must balance legal obligations with efforts to rectify unjust regulations.

Separating personal and professional ethics is vital. Personal values conflicts shouldn't be treated as ethical dilemmas, as they involve emotions and can't be rationally resolved. Joining a profession implies adherence to its standards, and courts have upheld this expectation.

Ethical dilemmas can be classified as "absolute" or "approximate." An absolute difficulty occurs when conflicting ethical standards lead to a crossroads. For instance, a clinician facing a competence gap yet limited local services must decide whether to treat an agoraphobic client. This pure ethical dilemma can be resolved by seeking competence while proceeding cautiously.

Approximate dilemmas involve conflicts between values, laws, and policies without clashing ethical standards. For example, a social worker compelled to report abuse may struggle with releasing confidential information. While not an absolute ethical dilemma, it's complex and requires analyzing ethics, morals, values, laws, and policies for resolution.

Addressing ethical dilemmas requires determining the dilemma, differentiating personal and professional aspects, and assessing ethical, moral, legal, and values considerations. This analysis guides the application of an ethical decision-making model.

In summary, ethical dilemmas arise when tough choices are present, offering multiple options, each involving ethical compromises. By distinguishing dimensions and applying decision-making models, social workers can navigate complex ethical situations effectively.
