Often we know how much we dream of what we expect (success). In fact, our dreams are too far away or our dreams are too many, making us confused to realize and prioritize it. Once there are successful people (visible from what they have) then we think that he was successful because of his hard work. Logically it is true. But do we always think that a person's success will not be fruitful if not accompanied by prayer and trust?
According to the title of this post, the effort without prayer is pride and prayer without effort is futility. When we try our best to achieve success but we forget not to pray (ask) is pride. For to be remembered, from where comes the success if not from God Giving Sustenance. And if we just pray without effort is folly and futility. For "Allah will not change the fate of a people except the people themselves who change what is in themselves" QS 13:11.
In realizing the dream we need both (prayer & effort) to end with tawakal (surrender to God). For prayer & effort is our capital. As we are fishing, we need hooks and baits. If we say, prayer is kailny's eye while effort is our bait. If we want to get salmon of course we can not use a normal hook with a worm bait, right? Likewise with success. If we want to achieve great success, prayer and effort must be comparable to what we want.
Prayer and effort are our capital, just how do we make them both qualified. For the result just put it. Because Allah is Knowing and often what we want is not necessarily needed and useful.
