So, today I will want to show us how to Differentiate male flowers from female flowers of cucumber and water mellons and also applicable to most Flowering plants..
Not all flowers found on Cucumber and water mellons produces fruits at the end of the growing season. The plant grows both male and female flowers on the same plant. While both flowers are the same color and similar in appearance, there some differences that you can look for to help identify which flowers are male and which are female.
**Examine the flowers and take notice of how they grow and when they open." **
Male flowers generally outnumber the female flowers on most varieties of cucumber aand water Mellon plants, and they open about 10 days before the female flowers. For every one female flower, most plants produce 10 to 20 male flowers, but each female flower on the plant produces fruit. There are varieties of cucumbers and water mellons available that produce more female flowers, and these varieties generally produce fruit earlier than others.
Inspect the bright yellow flowers growing on the cucumber and water mellon plant. Look behind each flower for a small immature cucumber or water mellon growing behind it. Female flowers have this immature bloom, known as an ovary, growing behind it, while male flowers do not. Male flowers grow on a thinner-looking stem.
Check the length of stems. Male flowers grow on shorter stems and usually grow in clusters of three to five flowers on the plant, while female flowers grow on longer stems and do not grow in clusters, but grow alone on a single stem.
