Spinosaurus means ‘Spined Lizard’. This Dinosaur is named after the row of high spines running down its backbone. These probably had skin stretched between them to form a ‘sail’ up to 2 m(6 ft) tall. It’s taller than most humans.
This enormous Dinosaur lived in the late Cretaceous period, around 98-95 million years ago, in what we now know as Africa. Spinosaurus walked on two legs and had a long, slender nose with jaws resembling a crocodile. Ooooh, that’s SCARY!
Its teeth were not sharp or made for ripping flesh like Giganotosaurus, but were long, cone-shaped, and interlocked.
This suggests that its main diet was probably fish, so it was likely a piscivore.
Did you know that the Spinosaurus swims underwater to get its food, which was mostly fish?
The Spinosaurus had a skull that was 1.75 m(5 ft 9 in). which can be compared to as long as an average man!
Alright, that’s about all for the ‘spined lizard ‘. I hope you enjoyed our first DINO FRIDAY!
