Hi, everyone. Its me again...
How was your Easter Monday celebration? I can imagine the lots of food, drinks and merry. Y'all definitely had fun..
Me? Nah, there was nothing of such for me. I was in the enclave of my room and my feet didn't even touch the soil outside. And I had a runny stomach too. It was so bad, it kept me stuck in these four walls - not like I even wanted to go out anyways.
But there was one thing I did today. I called my Dad. I call him almost all the time especially since he's faraway in some peaceful haven. But today was pretty different. It went beyond the normal routine talk of "how're you?" and "I'm fine" responses as its usual with African Fathers. We had this unusually long conversation and for the first time I could remember, I was comfortable talking about women with my father.. Odd, isn't it?
He dutifully listened to me, with punctuations of his laughter and giggles. I was prepped for a long lecture but funny enough, I didn't get one. He just made even much more wilder cracks and said a few things which cut me deep. Of all he said, what I'd never forget was his calm advice in two words, "Slow Down". We deviated, talked about other things, laughed some more till he had to take his nap.
Dropping the call, my fingers got to work and I strung some of the things he said into a piece. Yup, I wrote a poem inspired by what Dad had said to me. I titled it "Slow Down"
Feel free to peek.....
SLOW DOWN
Slow down, Father said.
Easy on these skirts.
There's more to life than getting different backs to warm your bed.
These pretty faces could be covers of dirt.
Listen, boy.
I see it in your eyes, don't act coy.
Your longing is evident in your every step.
You're becoming a man now, thus I expect the pep.
This thing you crave, its more than you'd ever know.
It goes beyond the physical thrusts and pleasured moans.
It has led many to the grave, those who always wanted more & never said no.
It is sweet, no doubt, tastier than a honeycomb.
But it is not a bitter thing that causes diabetes.
Not every mountain is to be climbed.
Not every skirt is to be conquered,
And not every woman to be mounted.
Child, tread with caution.
Trust me when I say you do not want to sprout.
Oh, you think I'm old eh?
I must be outdated - old skool - for I am now grey.
But, you listen, child, and don't forget,
That the headmaster was once a student.
I too was a killer in my time.
No woman said no to Okonkwo in his prime.
Your mother would tell you of my Legendary Chronicles.
I was the man - at my words, their ears tickled.
So slow down, boy. Be not in a haste.
Let be these curves and skirts.
They could be like gifts of Troy.
Focus & make that cheese,
then watch them flood your gates, willing to do as you please.
Slow Down, child.
Easy does it.
Easy, son. Easy.
