Temperature is a physical property of the body that means degree of hotness & coldness that determines the direction of heat flow between body & environment placed in thermal contact.
Normal : 98°F
[ ] Common site for measuring body temperature :
- Oral cavity (under tounge )
- Axilla
- Rectum
- Groin
- Skin
[ ] Type of temperature :
- Core temperature
- Surface temperature
[ ] Now, what is fever ?
Definition : Fever or pyrexia is a frequent medical sign that describes an increase in internal body temperature to the level above normal.
[ ] Grading of fever :
Low grade : 100.4°- 102.2° F
Moderate grade : 102.2°- 104° F
High grade : 104° - 106° F
Hyperpyrexia : > 106° F
[ ] Acute/ Chronic fever :
Acute fever : fever < 2 weeks
Chronic fever : fever > 2 weeks
[ ] Cause of fever :
Enteric fever
Urinary tract infection
Viral meningitis
Pneumonia
Malaria
Dengue mosquito
Upper airway infection
Tuberculosis
Kala azar
Leukaemia
& so on.
[ ] Complication of fever :
Increase body temperature
Fear of temperature
Loss of appetite
Generalized body ache
Weakness
Tremor
Lathergy
May be associated with diarrhoea
[ ] Note : Fever is not a disease but it occurs due to abnormal conditon of body system as a result of infection or allergy or other means. Body immune system try to fight with the harmful foreign substances of the body or abnormal condition. So temperature rises.
[ ] Treatment :
☆☆Love care of fever :
- Reassure the patient. The most important things of a patient in his/her ill condition is reassuring. It helps to
cure 50 % of the disease.
- Help him to reduce temperature by softly washing his/her whole body with a wet towel.
- Help him/her to feed regularly with good diet for better nutrition.
- Don't forget to give him/her the drug requred.
☆☆☆Most of the time its nothing but bacterial or viral infection. So relieved by normal drugs.
☆☆ Some drugs for fever :
( i have given the generic name of the drug for better understanding )
- Paracetamol
- Paracetamol + caffeine
- Aspirin : Diclofenac, ketorolac
- Neproxen
- Ibuprofen
- Indomethacin
