I've been using my MacBook air as my main computer for nearly four years now, you can just see the tiny machine in the picture below, to the right, and it works wonderfully (I am a bit of a Mac convert actually) but I decided to switch it up a couple of days ago while in the flat in Ramsgate and get back to using my Desktop as my main machine, while I'm in-situ!
When I'm at my co-working space, which is a fantastic work environment, I've got no choice but to use my laptop because I only pay for a hot desk, and it is fine, but I've also got into the habit over the weeks, months and years of just using the laptop when back at home too - it's just easier for work flow as I leave all my windows open when out of the flat (*) and then just open up the laptop and carry on when back at home.
(*) Funny turn of phrase thinking about it, of course I mean virtual windows, not the IRL physical fenestre variety!
The problem with relying on my laptop is that I've also got into the habit of sitting on my bed and working, rather than at my desk which is in the picture, and it's not really good for postural practice.
I haven't developed a hunch or a bad back yet, I figure this is a habit I'm better of breaking sooner rather than later, and also it's nice to be using a different machine with a larger monitor and keyboard.
The desktop keyboard is a much more positive ergonomic experience as there's slightly more room between the keys and I can hear them clunking while I type, which I like!
Yeah, so sitting upright on a chair, straight back, decent keyboard, nice large monitor which is easier on the eyes (actually it may even be too large, but I'm going with it), this is all so much better!
I don't know why I ever got out of the habit in the first place and I think when my land sale money goes through I may buy a better desktop rather than the current one I've got which while it functions just fine it is a relatively low spec one designed to be a back up machine, and it's already three years old!
And because I'm planning on being relatively settled rather than nomadic over the next few years, it makes sense to get back to using something which, long story short, is just a damned site more comfortable to use!
Not that I'm against my laptop, it will still continue to have its uses when I'm out and about, which will continue to be for a fair chunk of my working week, but when at home it's going to be the desktop all the way!
