So on top of the late start I had to this year, only having picked up my plot a month ago, it's also been a difficult year weather-wise: what with there being a lot of rain meaning the soil has been a bit on the sticky side to turnover, and the grass on the paths has been growing rapido.
So while I've got all the annual beds ready to go, and partially planted, it's been tough going....
I did a course of slug nematodes yesterday, which should keep slugs at bay for at least six weeks, just what young plants need!
In here so far I've got broad beans: the first transplants haven't done so well, so I've replaced a few with back ups I sowed, which are looking much healthier, and the beans I sowed direct two weeks ago are just starting to push up.
I sowed some french climbing beans also last weekend and I have my frames in but not tied up yet, no rush on that!
From a distance it looks like nothing much going on, but close up and my first spinach is just coming through.
I sowed three rows of spinach two weeks ago, not much point in sowing more than that in one go, I want to save some space for later successional sowings.
This week I put in some Kale too, just two rows.
Well three weeks on and the potatoes are pushing up, almost time to start earthing up, so that's good news.
The back end of this bed was tough to clear out - and I'm saving that for some beetroot, spring onions and just a couple of sweet potatoes.
Next weekend for those I think.
Nothing in here yet, there's too cold weather predicted for next week so I can't plant out the Butternut squash and courgettes that are currently in pots... they need to be indoors at night still!
I don't remember things ever being this slow back when I had an allotment in Surrey, maybe it's the area, maybe it's the year, but everything seems very late, but one has to work with what one is given, and as long as I get something out of the plot this year I'll be happy, anything!
And yes, I know the grass needs strimming, that's on the list!
