'Following' is a big thing on social media is it not? How many followers do you have on Twitter? Or on Steemit? What does that number say about your past success? Your influence? Or your potential future success?
I am not always sure how significant that number is. I am fairly convinced that a bigger number is better than a lower number. How much better, I do not know. However, there is one way in which I do not want to be followed too closely and that is when driving.
Don't you hate it when somebody tailgates you? Yes, 'tailgate' is a verb too and speaks of when somebody follows you too closely on the road. In my country, the law tries to prevent this. If you crash into somebody from behind you are the guilty party no matter what the other person did. If you had maintained a safe following distance you would not have crashed into that person. The accident is your fault.
One of my favourite Psalms also speaks of 'following'.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:
Psa 23:6a KJV
I have often wondered about this scripture. I do not want goodness and mercy following me. I want goodness and mercy with me, right there where I am. Not behind me.
Here is how I understand this to work.
When you are driving along in your car and something goes wrong, you immediately slow down or stop. Whether it is a weird sound from the engine, a bump in the road, a flat tire or a broken traffic light you stop or slow down. The moment you stop or slow down, whoever is following you will catch up with you.
I have seen this so many times in so many people's lives, including my own. The moment life throws something at someone, God's goodness and mercy catches up to them and enters the fray.
You may be looking at the road in front of you and see a bump ahead, some kind of trouble. Today I want to encourage you to also look in your rearview mirror. Goodness and mercy are right behind you. You will not be alone!
Is it not awesome to be able to say, 'The Lord is my shepherd!'
Did you know there is such a thing as a 'tailgate party'? You park your truck in an open space. Open the tailgate and put a cooler with drinks on it. Then you open the doors and turn the music way up. And there you have it. A party!
Here is my prayer for you.
I pray that goodness and mercy will follow you all the days of your life. And that in these coming days you will have a tailgate party with goodness and mercy. And that it will be great fun!
Are you being followed?
I sure hope so!
