The problem with the Western approach is that no clear theory of victory has been defined. I think the goal should be the eviction of Russian forces from inside all of Ukraine's 1991 borders and helping Ukraine retain its full sovereignty. Whatever the fallout from that might be should be left to Russia to deal with. For Ukraine to insure its long-term future, it needs to join the EU and NATO. Once if fulfills all the criteria, it should be welcomed.
Russia may or may not collapse in case of Ukraine's victory. That is far from certain. Whatever the result, the long-term containment of Russia is clearly in our interest. Any resultant problems in Russia are Russia's own.
