These words are just a small part of my story. They describe me but they don’t show everything about who I am. So, what am I behind words?
Hi! My name is Florie Jing Vargas. I am 33 years old. People call me “Jing”. I used to work as an OFW in Taiwan but now I am starting a new path as an ESL teacher.
I am very glad to be on this platform. To me, it feels like writing in a daily diary where I can freely tell my stories. I am excited to share my life experiences and just enjoy this wonderful space.
Tada! This is my family: My mom, my dad and my older sister. When I was 11, my mom went to work abroad.
She could not find a job in the Philippines because she did not finish school. It was hard for my sister and me. We missed having a mother at home. My dad worked too, so my sister and I were often alone.
We learned to be independent early. We did chores, budgeted our money. Back then, it was hard for my mom to send money. There was no Facebook so we wrote letters through the post office.
I wanted my mom to come home, so I got high grades and became a scholar. It was not enough to bring her back, but being independent helped me find skills and talents for my future.
With our parents help, my sister and I finished our studies. At first, we felt sad when our mom left. But even as kids, we chose to understand her sacrifice. We did not rebel.
After I graduated from college, I worked as Purchasing Assistant in Makati City for 1 year.
Then I decided to work abroad to help my parents with our expenses. I started working overseas in 2015 and I was lucky to go to Taiwan. I had great experience there. I learned many things and met a lot of people. I learned not just inside the company, but also outside. I learned about Taiwanese Culture, their language and how they lived and treat others. It was a big challenge at first because it was a new place but as time went on, I really enjoyed it.
I stayed in Taiwan for only six years. I could not go back because I got scoliosis. God also blessed me with a child, so I focused on taking care of my baby and doing my scoliosis therapy. Even with my condition, I told myself I could not just sit and do nothing. My husband was also having a hard time with our expenses. So, I looked for a work from job. This way, I could work while watching over my child. That was the start of my journey as an ESL teacher. Teaching has always been my passion since before. I used to teach my cousins and nieces. I feel happy knowing that I can help children In this way.
To be honest, I have always loved writing. It helped me overcome my depression. It is true, I became depressed when I was abroad. I was always worried about my dad because he lived alone. At that time, my sister already had her own family and moved out. We also faced a very big problem.
I am onboarded by @antonette and
@chinito. Thank you to them for their help. I can continue writing now. I can share my stories with other people. Through this, I can also improve my writing skills even more.
