To go a long to get along isn't helping anybody. It is better to have friends who can disagree with you than to have someone be friendly to you and not know what they think.
To have a discussion is healthy and good for you and society as a whole. To shut a voice down simply because of your opinions of the topic is more dangerous than the hurtful words you fear.
