Webinar Review Notes:
SuperLearner Webinar: Jonathan Levi
Increase retention rate, comprehension and reading speed.
Part 1: explanation of how brain works
Part 2: reading speed
Part 3: retain memories long term
Your brain the way evolution intended?
Vivid detailed visualization - strong linked memories and networks - techniques and tools for long term memory - rapid efficient speed reading techniques
Brain Evolved to:
Not meant to sit at a desk – brain not evolved for this
Are meant to have huge amounts of knowledge
Certain kinds of info have a survival advantage associated
Brain is good at forgetting
Strategy 1: Power of visual memory
Visual mneumonics
We already use these techniques frequently
How memories are formed in your brain – neurons fire together – a lot like googles search algorithm
Strategy 2: link your memories together to dramatically improve memory
-compare and contrast against existing relevant knowledge to “trick” your brain into thinking things are important
Mistake: creating only one connection to a piece of information.
Mistake: relying on auditory memory or poor repetition
Mistake: using boring, undetailed, common imagery
Strategy 3: how to read faster
Move eyes more efficiently
Spend less time in saccadic blindness
Make 2-3 movements instead of 10-12 movements
Avoid backskipping
Don’t read margins. First letter on the page
Reduce voice in your head that turns visual imagery into sounds – will limit you to 400wpm or less
Speed reading starts at 450wpm and can go to 600wpm or more
Mistake: skipping words like ‘and’ or ‘the’
Mistake: buying into myths about ‘photo reading’ – nobody is reading 1000 words per minute
Part 3: retain memories long term
Spaced repetition – timing repetition along the natural curve of forgetting
