True Spooky Story for Halloween about a Phanton Ghost Ship sighted off Eastern Prince Edward Island since 1786.

There are many fantastic and varied stories of sightings of this mysterious Phantom Ship seen in the waters of the Northumberland Strait.

I took this photo of the picture of the Ghost Ship that hangs in the lighthouse.

The picture of the fiery ghost ship is on a wall at the Wood Islands Lighthouse.

This lighthouse was built in 1876 and located along the Northumberland Strait. It is close by the ferry crossing between Woods Islands, PEI and Pictou, Nova Scotia.

There have been many sightings and local singer and songwriter Lennie Gallant sang a song about this mysterious ghost ship called Tales of the Phantom Ship.

In the song these words:

“ There's a burst of flame and a flash of light/And there on the tide is a frightening sight/As a tall ship all aflame lights up the sky/Tales of the phantom ship, from truck to keel in flames/She sails the wide Northumberland Strait/No one knows her name.”

There have been old timers who have said they could see people on the ship. They always say the rigging and spars are ablaze, weird tongues of fire lick at the three masts and a red glow overhangs the scene.

Looking out on the Northumberland Strait at sunset. I took this photo one evening Hubby and I took a walk along the shore. I was hoping to see the Ghost Ship but only saw the beautiful sunset.

No one knows for sure what ship it was - perhaps a pirate ship or an immigrant ship of Irish people or highland Scots. One witness from the early 1900's saw three crisp white sails and a shiny black hull before the vessel was engulfed in flames and disappeared.

Canada Post featured the flaming ship on a 2014 stamp.
