This Yellow bellied warbler goes by several other names besides Setophaga Kirtlandii, local folk of Michigan have named the bird Jack Pine or Jack Pine Warbler. The bird comes from the family Parulidae, taken from the man who discovered the bird Jared Potter Kirtland, a doctor from Ohio and an amateur Naturalist. The bird needs acres of young Jack Pine for breeding habitat. At least 160 acres, that’s a lot of pine nuts! Pine needs cyclic burns to stay healthy and germinate seeds. Humans have prevented annual burns caused by lightening. The bird went near extinction because of loss of habitat. Regular burns and seedlings have returned healthy forest and Kirkland’s Warbler has recovered a healthy breeding population.
I wanted to create a series of bird paintings using the primary colors of blue, red, and yellow. This winter I will paint another bird series using secondary colors on the color wheel.
