However, the Yagrumo is not exclusive to the high mountains; it is a representative tree of the American intertropical zone and extends from Mexico to South America, being also common in lowlands with warm climates.
This tree grows to about 25 m and has a diameter greater than 60 cm. The leaf is grayish or silvery on the underside, a color that is given by a layer of hairs that covers it. These hairs shine in the sunlight and this makes that where there are many trees of this species can be seen from a distance whitish spots in the forest, the "gray hairs of the mountain". The fruits of the Yagrumo are arranged as hanging clusters that look like long fingers. These fruits are eaten by sloths, bats, howler monkeys, squirrels, parrots, partridges and other bird species.
It is important to know that this species is what is called a fast-growing pioneer species, which establishes itself in the open areas within the forest and becomes part of it. This property of the species makes it recommended for reforestation in degraded areas.
