It takes some people great amount of time on the Hive space to realize that Hive is not like your regular social media account. Some newbies come on Hive and see it as another regular site without value. Some people joined Hive for the money, while some joined Hive for the community and the future value. While some people joined for the money and stayed for the community. We have others that joined Hive because they wanted a complete decentralized ownership of their content. But Hive is far greater than that, Hive is your social media app, your bank, your investment platform, your piggy bank and your diary.
Everyone is currently talking about Web 3.0 and this is something we are currently enjoying on Hive meaning that Hive is far ahead of it’s time. Imagine being on Hive for over 10 years, that’s a lot of information and activities shared on the blockchain. That’s definitely your legacy, your ideas, your memories, your content, your transactions and your money embedded on the blockchain.
Lots of people share a lot of content here on Hive, from setting personal goals to achieve, to actually achieving those goals. We come here and see lots of people celebrate their goals and their achievements and if you look back at their previous post you will realize that they have made a post regarding their intentions towards setting those goals and looking forward to achieving them. This is now recorded in the blockchain and it shows proof of ones journey in life through the blockchain. The beauty of this is that, unlike other Web 2.0 platforms, you totally own your contents and have all the rights. No one has power over your content or your account except you. I can remember when a friend lost her Hive account keys and she needed to retrieve it. That was when I realized the power of decentralization. The terminal team couldn’t help her retrieve her account without her active or owner’s keys. But for a centralized authority, retrieving the account is possible, this means that they have the power to control your account which includes blocking it or deleting your content.
Protection
The concept of plagiarism is something that will always be frowned upon, this is the most frowned upon offense on the blockchain. Plagiarism is digitally stealing someone’s content and posing like it’s yours without giving the original owner credit. So plagiarizing is more of you stealing from the blockchain. The blockchain works on a proof of brain basis where you get paid for using your brain to create contents. If you are not using your brain and stealing someone’s content to post and collect the rewards, you are stealing from the blockchain. The blockchain rewards fresh content, that’s literally what makes you get rewarded by the blockchain.
To protect your legacy, don’t plagiarize your post or your account. That’s going to be a dent in your legacy on the blockchain. Your account, profile and avatar represents you, when people see that, they should think of credibility, fidelity and think of you as a person that added value to the blockchain no matter how small you may think your value is.
Aside protecting your legacy from plagiarism also protect your keys. You must have heard the “Not Your Keys Not Your Coin” term. Anyone that comes in contact with your keys automatically own your account. Always protect your keys, if you lose your keys either to a scammer or generally misplacing it, you have lost your legacy and it’s going to take a miracle to get your account back.
Legacies can be passed from one person to another, so can you do with your Hive account. Considering putting your Hive account in wills and leaving it as an inheritance is absolutely not a bad idea. This way your digital asset, account is active on the blockchain. Hive is way beyond being just a social media platform, it can be used to store monetary value and representation of value like NFTs.
Notable celebrities die and their social media platform die with them, their profile page is just used as a photo album for their past activities during their existence. Aside those photos, what can those accounts do? But with Hive, when the keys are passed to a Next of Kin, the account can still be used to add value to the blockchain by either creating content, curating content or running a witness node. It will be like passing a company from one person to another and the series of activities done by the account.
