For a long moment things were looking pretty ugly between Scarlett Johansson and Disney. She accused them of breach of contract, or throwing her movie under the buss and they accused her of being greedy. They were both right. Sure, Black Widow seems like one of the only movies that made money during the pandemic on a narrow widow in which people thought that COVID is behind us, but that was only in the U.S. overseas most of theaters were closed and China didn't release the movie because it was their party celebration month. Marvel makes a lot of money in China. Releasing the movie then was a terrible mistake from that regard. Disney+ didn't help. Sure Johansson did get a cut of that money, but Disney+ means no repeat viewings. If you paid 29.90$, that's it. You can watch the movie as many times as you like and that's box office money lost. And backend deals money lost. But Black Widow would have never been a billion dollar movie no matter what Scarlett Johansson claims. It was a good movie, but it lacked the grandeur of billion dollar movies. Yet Disney learned from their mistakes and all of their movies that had day and day releases in theaters and Disney Premium got a sequel and a very nice salary raise to the actors involved. So no one is complaining anymore.
Also, for a moment it looked like Johansson will never work with Disney again. She is the producer and maybe lead of their new Tower of Terror movie, but she was fired with the lawsuit. Rumors started flying that Brie Larson will replace her, but no. Since Disney and Johansson settled on her law suit Johansson is now back to the Tower of Terror and Disney even confirmed that they have more common projects in the making. I hope that those projects are Black Widow projects. She probably didn't get all of the money that she wanted, but she probably got a lot of money to make her happy, but not enough to make Disney unhappy.
I guess that Kevin Feige had something to do with this settlement. Even though he made no official statement about the situation, he loves his actors and always wants to stay in good relations with them. Maybe he wants the opportunity to bring back her character in some way. I am all for it.
It actually seems like this new wave of people being unhappy with day and day releases is over. Johansson got her money, many actors got sequels and a pay raise and WB paid all over their talents billions of dollars. For now it all looks good as it seems we are heading back to theaters only releases.
