It is over the top. I would never let a 12 year old watch it, no matter what. But sometimes in horror, some things are just for shock value, not for the sake of the plot. Also, there were a very episodes that didn't contribute anything to the overall plot, but they did help develop the characters. And a few things did click together in the end. Still, if you get a chance in the future to finish the show you should.
