New Mutants was directed and written by Josh Boone. It has been postponed endless amount of times since its original release date in April 2018 and eventually came out on August 28, 2020. During the pandemic. Obviously that caused the movie not to make impressive amounts of money, making it a feeble ending to the Fox licensed by Marvel era. But you know what? It's not such a bad movie. Maybe because I had low expectations because of the terrible reviews. I found it to be entertaining enough.
Most of the actors in this movie are not super famous, but they do a good job. Blu Hunt plays Dani Moonstar. Anya Taylor-Joy plays Illyana Rasputin. From some reason the script turns Rasputin into a bitch. Maisie Williams plays Rahne Sinclair. Yes, her powers here are a bit ironic after Game of Thrones. Charlie Heaton plays Sam Guthrie. Henry Zaga plays Roberto da Costa. And then there is the only one staff person in the hospital, Dr. Reyes played by Alice Braga. The cast isn't super exciting, but the actors do the best with what they are given, and they aren't given much.
The plot of this movie is very straight forward. Dani wakes up in a hospital after a tragic event. She learns that she is a mutant, and that she is not alone. The hospital has a few other mutants with her. They are all trapped there. Dr. Reyes is there to help them control their powers so they won't be a danger to others. But Rasputin suspects that that is not the reason that they are there. In the meantime as the mutants get close to each other and form a close group, strange things begin to happen. Very strange things. They must find out what is going on and how to stop it in order to survive.
The biggest problem that this movie has is that it is too close to the source material, yet I think it expects you not to know it. I read two issues of New Mutants, so I know the powers of the characters. The movie expects you not to know. But they didn't do anything interesting with the story from the comics. It's just too damn close. They try to use some horror tropes, but as a horror fan I find that they do not work. At least they are not idiots in a horror movie.
The best part of the movie is the Easter Eggs. The trailer for this movie already says, "it's not a hospital, it's a cage." I was shocked and excited when we find out who owns this cage. Not who are you expecting at all. And only comic book readers will get it. But it is cool. If this movie will have a sequel which I wish it did, it will be so cool to explore this aspect, but we all know it is not going to happen.
It's an ok movie. There isn’t a lot of action in it, but when there is, it is cool. I mean Rasputin's powers are super impressive. But they gave her a few powers that belong to a different character in the comics which annoyed me to no end. The dialogue is decent. The teenagers act like teenager, but not completely stupid. It's not terribly exciting, but it is not a bad movie. It's just ok. And I'm ok with that. At some points I even enjoyed it.
Considering that it is hard to find big new movies to watch, you can totally give this one a try.
