This actually wasn't a surprise, the rumors have been out there since the first push back. Mulan is going mostly digital. Just not in the way we expected it to.
Mulan will be available on Disney+ on September 4 for 29.90$, on top of your subscription cost. I know that it sounds like a lot of money, but a lot of people paid 19.90 to simply rent Trolls: World Tour for 48 hours. This will give you unlimited access to the movie and to all of the people who share your account. So in the end it feels like a fair price. With one problem. Most of the world doesn't have Disney+.
But, as for the rest of the world Mulan will hit theaters on the same date. Most importantly Mulan will hit theaters in China, where theaters are just starting to reopen. The box office numbers look pretty glum. This movie was literally made for them with the lead actress being really popular in China. But now, I will be surprised if the movie will open with 10 million dollars in China.
What really sucks is that a lot of countries don't have Disney+ or open movie theaters so no movie for us. Which super sucks. I know, I live in one these countries. Before Covid-19, I already made plans to see it in theaters. Not going to happen now.
Movie theaters owners in the U.S. I think are really angry that they are robbed of a blockbuster that could help revive them. But, let's be real, Mulan isn't Beauty and the Beast. Even under the best of circumstances it would have only been a moderate hit. A Maleficent at best. So, not the savior that movie owners seems to think that they have lost. They are reading the signs wrong.
But Disney never does anything without a reason. If this new release date sounds familiar, it is because WB's and Christopher Nolan's Tenet comes out in global theaters just one day prior. Global theaters not including the U.S. Disney tries to cut the competition around every corner. I don't think any of them looks strong enough to bring people back into theaters. But now I see a rumor that Tenet will start screening a week earlier, probably trying to escape the shadow of Disney . I don't think any of them will escape the shadow of Covid-19.
