Well, it's been a while since DC did something right, but here it is. Joker has broken some serious records. It is now a billion dollar movie. It even made more money than The Dark Knight, though not the sequels. It had the highest opening for a movie coming out in October beating out Venom. The second highest opening for an R rated movie, because the first It movie did open bigger. It is the highest grossing R rated movie of all time. It is also the only movie to ever make a billion dollars with a budget under 100 million dollars. Which makes it the most profitable comic book movie of all time. Not that Marvel should cry, but their movies are expensive and cost a lot of advertise while Joker was cheap all around. While critics didn't love the movie giving it only 69 percent, audiences score on the same site is 89 percent, and it's IMDB score is 8.8. Audiences really connect with the movie. I guess that critics don't like having fingers pointed at them.
I hope this movie gets the Oscar nominations that it deserves. Although it's been a really long time since a profitable movie got real Oscar nominations. Last time I watched the Oscars live was when the The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King won 11 Oscars. Because of the time differences I had to stay up all night basically. But still, Joker isn't a movie that will keep me up at night, but maybe it will. We will see.
Until the end of awards season, don't expect to hear news about a sequel, or different villains getting the Joker treatment in their own movies. WB and DC want all the focus staying on the Joker and not the future. That's for later.
Do you think that the Joker will get nominated for awards? Can it get a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars?
