Chapter Five
Jamie awoke the next morning to see a naked Steven sitting up in bed beside her on his laptop.
He seemed to be completely immersed in whatever it was that he was reading.
“Wasn’t last night good enough for you?” Jamie asked, laughing.
“Huh? Oh, I am looking up information about our parents deaths. I see you come from a very
good background.”
“You didn’t believe me when I said my father was a police officer?”
“It’s not that. I see your father was working his way up to Chief of Police and if
he could have lasted about another year, or so, he would have been it.”
“My mother never told me about that. She did, however, tell me how
smart and strong my father was. She said he would do anything for his family.
I guess that meant even if he had to risk his life to save someone else.”
Steven closed up his laptop and set it over on the desk at the far end of the room.
At the sight of a standing Steven, Jamie felt her heart start to pound; as Steven’s
erection was standing up and saluting them both.
“Seeing something you like?” Steven eased his way back to the bed.
“I see you still have your tie on, Mr. Mercury.”
“I notice you are wearing your tie, as well, Miss Conway.”
With that said Jamie got up and positioned herself on her knees at the
edge of the bed. When Steven was right in front of her, she wrapped
her arms around his neck and leaned in to whisper in his ear, “I know you
said we would make love in the shower this morning, but I can’t wait that long.”
That was all it took, just as Jamie had leaned back, Steven grabbed a
hold of her tie and pulled her in for a kiss. He then looked deep into her eyes, as if
seeking an approval that he knew she had already given. Jamie grabbed his
tie then and pulled him in and whispered to him again, “I know where I want you.”
Still holding on tightly to Steven’s tie, Jamie guided him out to the kitchen.
The look Steven gave her was priceless. “So, you want to sit and watch
me make you breakfast in the buff?”
“No, Silly, I want you to bend me over the sink and put your little friend there to good use.”
“Ask you and shall receive.” Steven bent Jamie over and gave her a
good, hard smack on the ass and then gave her all he had.
Pulling out right before he came, Jamie swung around, got on her knees, and
took in every last drop; licking Steven with a dirty grin. “You know, Miss Conway, I think
you have chosen the wrong profession,” Steven said with a chuckle.
“I believe I am a damn fine cop, Mr. Mercury, and with that being said; make me
some breakfast!” Jamie scampered off then for a shower and to get dressed.
Steven stood laughing and got to work, letting Jamie get her shower first.
In the middle of making eggs, his phone rang; it was James and he was in a sour mood.
“Mercury, where the hell have you and Conway been? I figured you would
have checked in early this morning.”
“Sorry, Sir, we have been a little preoccupied.”
“Well I need you both to the barracks within the next hour. I have a good
lead on our pair and we have to move fast before they get away again.”
“Yes, Sir, we will be there as quickly as possible.”
Hanging up, Steven felt a sincere feeling of dread come over him.
Something was definitely up and now it was time for him to finish Jamie’s
breakfast and get things set in motion.
Steven and Jamie arrived to the barracks with fifteen minutes to spare.
James eyed them up and down and then pulling out a file, asked them to have a seat.
“These are pictures from last night’s event.” James spread two photos
out on his desk. “The man you see here is the one who gave the biggest
donation of the evening. The second picture is of the check he gave.
And here is a third picture.” At the sight of the photo Jamie let out a gasp.
“The third is of Mr. Richardson after he was brutally beaten and shot in the back of the head.”
“I don’t understand,” Jamie said in horror.
“Mr. Richardson was followed home and upon reaching his door, he was
jumped and beaten. We are figuring it was a second party that shot him
in the back of the head. My guess is Miss Raine and Mr. Right wanted to
make sure to send a strong message to us. The home was broken into
and an unknown amount of money and items were stolen. Mr. Richardson’s
widow was out on business and unable to attend the charity event with her husband.
If not for that little matter, she too would have been murdered.”
“So, where is the pair now?” Steven gathered up the photos and handed
them back to James, as he could see it was still too early for Jamie to see such a horrific sight.
“A call came in at around nine this morning that Jason had been in the
pawn shop in the heart of the city. The clerk said he had come in, in a hurry
and wanted to pawn a few antiques for whatever money he could get. Once
the money was given to him, he ran out to a dark blue Ford Mustang.
The clerk was able to get us a license plate number. The car was
reported stolen after the event last night and has been located at
the entrance to the Seaville Banking company. My guess is the
payout on the items wasn’t enough and our pair are playing greedy and going in for more money.”
“We’re on it.” Steven stood up and headed for the door.
“You go out to the truck, Steven; I would like a word with Miss Conway alone.”
Steven raised an eyebrow at James, but did as he was ordered.
Jamie sat in wonderment as to what could be going on.
“How is Steven treating you, Jamie?” James said in a calm manner.
“Real good, James, I am glad that we were given this opportunity to work together.”
“Ok, Jamie, I wanted to make sure all was well, because I know how things
have been for you in the past with other partners.”
“We seem to be more compatible and Steven is always looking out for my best interest.”
“Well, just be careful. Steven has told me about what Jennifer
revealed to him and the connection you both share regarding your parents’ deaths.
It would be, too easy, for you both to put yourselves at an even greater risk knowing what is at stake.”
“You have nothing to worry about, James. We are on the same page with everything
and we will see that justice be served for all, following the proper procedures of the law.”
“Very well then, now get out there and catch these idiots once and for all!”
“Yes, you got it, Sir!”
Jamie ran out the door to see Steven staring intently at the building.
She knew this was a tough case for them, but as long as they were together, anything was possible.
As Steven drove towards the bank, the Mustang stood out like a sore thumb.
There was no excitement for the moment and the car was empty.
Steven drove around the block and parked in an alleyway.
As he and Jamie got out of the truck, they looked to one another
for reassurance that this time they would nab their perps once and for all.
They started to walk towards the bank when they heard the alarms inside
the building sounding off. People ran out screaming and smoke started to
pour out of the building. Steven and Jamie drew their guns and ran up as
close as they could get. Just then they saw Jason and Jennifer running out, firing
shots at Jamie and Steven, the pair ran to the Mustang. Jamie managed to shoot
out one of their tires before they peeled out of the parking lot. The car sped off
though and Jamie and Steven ran back to the truck, calling for back up in the process.
Getting in the truck, Steven pulled out and sped in the direction the pair had gone.
The Mustang was parked in the middle of the road about four blocks from the bank
with the doors hanging wide open. The couple had managed to flee in an unknown
vehicle and there was no telling where they had gotten to.
“Dammit! How do we keep losing them?” Steven was furious.
“I don’t know, but we have to keep going. They must be close, I mean, it didn’t
take us that long to come to the Mustang in the road. Maybe someone around here saw
something?” Jamie tried to hold onto hope.
“We can’t separate. We either drive around trying to scope them out, or we go
around and ask if anyone saw anything. What would you prefer?”
“Call James and see what he wants us to do. While you are doing that, pull over
and let me go around and see if I can find someone who saw what happened.
And don’t look at me that way either, Steven, because they are not here.”
“Fine, go ahead, but just be careful.”
Jamie took off and started going from shop to shop and stopping any passing
people to question them. When she figured she was out of luck someone came
running up to her. “Are you a cop?”
“Yes, I am, is there anything I can help you with?”
“Someone stole my car! I was in having coffee and I looked out the window
to see these two idiots breaking into my car. I ran out screaming at them and
they pointed their guns at me and told me to stay put, or they would shoot.
I called the cops, but was told that there was a fire at the bank and that
someone would get to me as soon as possible. As soon as possible doesn’t
work for me though. I want my car!”
Jamie pulled out a notebook and wrote the drivers information down.
She tried to reassure him that she would do all in her power to get his car back
to him immediately. She then ran back to the truck and told Steven what she
had found out. He pulled out and they went in search for their car.
After over an hour of searching the city, the pair decided to retreat to the
barracks and find out more about the bank fire. James was not only pissed
over the bank fire, but fuming even more once he found out that the couple had eluded them again.
“I am starting to think that I have the wrong people on this case!” James snapped.
“We are doing the best we can!” Steven snapped back.
“Guys, come on, this isn’t getting us anywhere,” Jamie said.
“I put you guys on this assignment because I figured with two of you working
together, it would be and open and shut case. I just don’t understand what the problem is here?”
“James, we have been working real hard to catch these perps. I watched my house
go up in flames, had to sit through a three hour charity event, and now, once again to
be chasing damn ghosts! I don’t know what more you want from us?” Steven said, glaring.
“I want you to catch these guys, so I can have the book thrown at them!”
“Give us one more shot, please, James.” Jamie started to plead.
“Kiddo, for you, I will give one more chance. If you guys can’t get them this time
though, it will be time to bring a new set of eyes in.”
“Fair enough, James, so where do you want us to go from here?”
“I want you to go home and get some rest. Make sure to have your phones close.
I am hoping for another sighting of these creeps, so that we can try and zero in on
them again. I also want you back in your undercover gear. It may not seem
right, but I’m sure you can figure out some way to make it work in your favor.”
Steven gave Jamie a small smirk and she blushed. James was so upset that
he didn’t even pick up on what was going on between them.
The pair set out, back to Jamie’s place. The drive was filled with silence as
they each pondered what had just gone down at the barracks. When they arrived
back to the house it was late afternoon and the air was nice and warm for the
middle March. They let Howler out for a while and then settled in to discuss
what they should do next. Their first decision was to go undercover, but as
a couples couple. Jamie was excited because she would finally get to wear
a dress; it would give her a chance to explore a side of herself that she had
never really had a chance to take in before.
So, the couple took off again and went into the city for Jamie to purchase a dress.
She found the perfect one and was heading out to the truck when she noticed
Jennifer across the street. Steven was already zoomed in and after throwing
her dress in the truck; they laid low and waited to see where their perps were heading.
The south side of the city had a feel of richness all its own. The houses were
quite fancy and the grass was just a little bit greener. They followed the pair
through the area and back out again. Figuring they were scoping out their
next target, Jamie phoned James to let him know of the goings on. They
followed the couple right back out to the heart of the city and to an older
building. Watching them exit the old beater and head up the steps to where
they were staying, Jamie and Steven awaited their chance to catch their
pair and end this charade once and for all.
It was around eight o’clock and Jamie was about to fall asleep. One little
light in the window of the old apartment indicated that Jason and Jennifer
were still awake.
“This is the part of the job I hate the most.” Jamie yawned.
“I know, Hun, but if we go in there now; they will have too much of a chance
to get a shot at us. I like the art of surprise myself.”
“Me, too, but what if they stay up all night?”
“Then guess what we will be doing?”
“Ugh.” Jamie wound down her window and listened to the sounds of the city at night.
“Just take in the feel of the city,” Steven said.
“Take what in? The off odor, the noise of constant commotion, and all of the
things I try to avoid in my life. I would rather be back at the farm with the peace
and quiet.”
“We will get back there soon enough, but for now, it is best to become one with
our surroundings.”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever you say…” Jamie sounded like a bratty kid.
“I have heard the art of spanking is good for a spoiled child.” Steven raised an
eyebrow at Jamie.
“I wouldn’t recommend that, Mr. Mercury. I will stay on my best behavior, promise.”
With that said Jamie raised her right hand and smiled like a child that had just
gotten her own way.
“We will see about that.” Steven smirked.
It was almost midnight and the light still shone in the window. Jamie was
fast asleep and Steven was becoming impatient. Even though he had said
they would stay there all night, even he was starting to wonder what the deal was.
“I’m going in,” Steven said as he checked to make sure he had his gun and badge handy.
Jamie awoke and looked all around. “That damn light is still on!”
The frustration Jamie felt was a mirror of Steven’s and he was glad to see
that they were on the same page.
“I said we would wait, but I think we have waited long enough. Get your
gun ready, Conway, and let’s go kick some perp ass!”
Jamie checked to make sure all was secure and the pair eased their way
quietly out of the truck. Steven signaled for him to go first and Jamie was
fine with that, as she was still trying to get focused after sleeping for so long.
Steven looked the car over first and saw what looked to be a bunch of
junk inside. He then edged to the steps leading into the apartment.
Signaling Jamie to come closer, he took it one quiet step at a time.
Once he reached the door, Jamie was about partway up the steps.
Steven kicked the door in and gun raised raided the place. All he saw, besides
the place being turned upside down, was a note…
“When will you stupid Bastards figure out that you can’t catch us?
Stay off of our heels and mind your own business before the girl gets hurt.
We killed her father and killing her would only add to our glory!”
Jamie shuddered when she saw the note. Steven phoned James and
made him abreast of the situation, he then escorted Jamie back out to the
truck and they left. Steven figured James could handle this alone as he
needed to get Jamie home safely.
Arriving at Jamie’s, Steven could sense the fear that she was holding in.
He got out and walked around the truck. This time he had to open the door
and he literally carried Jamie to the house and took her immediately into the
bedroom, laying her on the bed he waited for her to say something.
“I won’t let them do to me what they did to my father. I am, too aware of the
situation, and am too damn determined to hang them once and for all.”
“There’s that attitude that will save you. Stay tough, Jamie, and don’t let this
weigh on you so much. I will do everything in my power to protect you.”
“Right now I just want to sleep.”
“Sounds like a plan.” Steven crawled in bed beside Jamie and cradled
her in his arms. A peaceful feeling fell over them both and they slept until
the morning sun rose. What they would find when they went outside would startle them both.
