This is not the post I had planned for today. Yesterday's post-receive a comment from mypathonfire@mypathonfire asking if I was going to discuss creating a brand. This told me I did a poor job talking about having a style guide. So today's post is about creating a brand.

What Is Brand?

Investopedia defines a brand as

a business and marketing concept that helps people identify a particular company, product, or individual. Brands are intangible, which means you can't actually touch or see them. As such, they help shape people's perceptions of companies, their products, or individuals. Brands commonly use identifying markers to help create brand identities within the marketplace. They provide enormous value to the company or individual, giving them a competitive edge over others in the same industry. As such, many entities seek legal protection for their brands by obtaining trademark

What Makes A Brand

I am sure you knew both of those logos and identified them almost immediately as Nike and Twitter. Those companies spent millions and millions of dollars to be recognized as a symbol.

In ClickTrackProfits, there is a feature called the 'Gauntlet'. In the Gauntlet, you can test a splash page or any page. You receive feedback on your page from other members. One thing I can guarantee you, is that if you don't have your picture on the page you will get multiple comments saying. "No branding". This is because the ClickTrackProfit training talks about using your picture as branding.

Your face can be your brand. A logo can be your brand. A slogan, like "See You At The Bank", can be your brand.

When you are creating a website, the whole website represents you and your brand. Using a style guide will ensure your website does a good job,

If you went to a website where the posts used a variety of fonts, the pages were in different formats, and incompatible colors were used in different places, what would you think about that website? As a guess, you probably won't spend much time there. It would appear very unprofessional and not worth your time.

This is why you need a style guide.

What is in a style guide?

A style guide can contain

Color palette specifying which colors are used for what
Fonts specifying which font is used for what
Logo (icon)
Logo with company name
Business cards
Letterhead
Envelopes

For a big business, there are probably more things in the style guide but for the purpose of your website, the first 4 are what is necessary. With those 4 you can make a very professional website. When you are customizing your theme, you can use your style guide to make sure that every part of your website consistently represents your style/brand. (Remember, themes have a default style.)

Conclusion

Remember in the definition of a brand at the beginning of this post, it said, "Brands are intangible". You may not be able to touch a brand, but you sure can recognize them.

Start branding yourself now. Get your face, logo, and slogan in front of as many people as you can, as often as you can. You want to be recognizable and can start that before you have your website.

True Story - For months, I have been signing my videos, emails, and posts with "See You At The Bank". This week when I told people my name, they responded, "See You At The Bank". I was amazed. It took a long time but it was becoming a slogan for me.

See You At The Bank,
