Introduction
There are many study techniques that we implement throughout our student life and with each one of them we are forged, of course, some of these techniques are compatible with our way of studying and others will not, and that's what it is to discard those techniques that we feel are not useful, another way would be to improve them for that purpose.
Perhaps one of the best known study techniques in the educational world is to underline texts, most students do this in order to highlight the most important aspects of the text and thus speed up their learning on a particular subject, however, is underlining a highly effective study technique or everything depends on the way we do it?
Two interesting questions that have an enormous impact when applying this technique, for example, on some occasions we have come across books whose text is underlined everywhere, i.e. a very extensive underlining, which leads us to deduce that such underlining does not show any dedication in selecting key words of certain content.
On the other hand, we can say that each person has a different view of logic and what seems interesting to us is not interesting to others, emphasizing the recognized aspect of the diversity of criteria, however, underlining can be applied more selectively without resorting to the action of underlining the entire text.
Experimental deduction
The technique of underlining has awakened the interest of other essential fields for our evolution such as science, and it must be this way because the field of education is undoubtedly the means of transport or expansion for all kinds of scientific-technological information, that is why everyone wants to give the best study techniques to students.
To give veracity to this technique we will focus on a study conducted by Robert L. Fowler and Anne S. Barker. Barker, summarizing this study we can focus on saying that it consisted of giving a text to a certain group of students, but the text given had the following conditions, read without underlining, the other read and then underline it and the other condition was that the text was already underlined.
After one week the students should answer some questions related to the text provided, before presenting the corresponding evaluation, these students were allowed to read the text again, each group divided in the same way as the material was provided under the conditions described above.
The interesting thing was the results obtained, where the researchers found no difference in these results in relation to the selection of the groups according to the above conditions, in the same way other similar investigations have been carried out reaching the same results, where statistically the same results are imperceptible.
How should we put the underlining technique to good use?
After finding the above results, someone could undoubtedly think that underlining would be useless, this would be a very light decision in my experience, maybe underlining in a broad way does not really represent an effective study technique, however, when we properly apply this technique it can be very useful, therefore, to underline those key words and not make the mistake that many make which is to underline almost an entire page, perhaps with the idea of thinking that the more they underline their learning will be greater.
There are many keys for us to correctly apply this technique, for example, perform a first and second reading of the text before starting to underline to then be clearer about how to identify the key words or relevant information that conveys the purpose of the text as it always does.
Not all people feel comfortable with the technique of underlining and therefore do not carry it out and have proven that they can perform as well as those who do, and this is supported by scientific experiences, however, it is fair to say that when we manage to apply the technique of underlining correctly, it will be very useful in any learning purpose.
Conclusion
The technique of underlining, like other techniques used in the field of education, will have its acceptance in some people, but not in others, sometimes for not applying it in the right way they avoid them, and others to realize how to use it in the best way they stay with them, the important thing is that each person who implements a study technique feels comfortable with it and can get the most out of it as possible.
The field of education is the fundamental pillar for the development of humanity and it is because of its great diversity of study techniques in order to facilitate the learning of all people who decide to transit this beautiful and essential within the classroom, since this stage we must all burn it to feel completely satisfied in life and not regret later who does not pass it.
