Running my business is the first and foremost obligation in my life. However, I teach a couple classes each semester at Millikin University. Today was the fist day of my Financial Decision Making Class. My goal is to have my students see objects with dollar signs. For example, if you see a coffee table you should see the factory that made the screws that hold it together, the person that cut the tree down for the wood, the carpenter that put it all together, the store owner that operates the business that sells the coffee table and all their costs involved.
On the first day, after introductions, I put a cup of coffee on the desk and say "tell me the financial story of this coffee." Usually, the class is quite for a few minutes and I have to push them into seeing it.
These students were on it! Within minutes then were talking about labor and food costs and how variable costs effect a break-even analysis.
This is a picture that was taken 30 MINUTES AFTER CLASS WAS OVER talking about leadership and motivation in business. I finally told them that I had to go. I was later told that they stayed in that little group for another 20 minutes just talking about the cost of coffee. These people are hungry for knowledge and I hope that I can help!
This semester if going to be a great one because they are going to push me to be better and get new material so I can push them to learn.
Normally this class is tough to teach because it satisfies the accounting portion of a BA in Entrepreneurship but I need to gear it towards non-accounting majors. But I'm excited and I really believe my students are too!!!!
