Fall is a great time to chase the fish because they know it's getting cold and winter is coming. In order to survive, the fish will feed and so they will stop hiding and will be roaming. They are in search of the bait fish as they will also be in the open as vegetation dies down and they are left with less structure to hide from. They too have to feed up for the winter so they will be actively looking for warmer shallow water with zoo plankton.
With that said, using lures that would cover a lot of water will be the key of catching a lot of fish this season. The square bill crankbait is very deadly for this situation as the unique flat tip allows it to deflect off many type of structures such as rocks and branches. For a lure with 2 treble hooks, the snag ration is amazingly low!
I would throw this lure with thick line like 20 lbs because it have some water resistance, which will make the lure dive less deep, keeping it higher in the water column so the fish can see it. of course u still need to select a lure that dives deep enough to touch the bottom.
the key for me is that you want to be able to do constant 3-4 ft, but if you crank hard you can still hit the bottom.
Enjoy the video of me doing some damage this fall!
