🦉 The black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius)

📚 Dryocopus (Greek): drys, dendron - tree; kopos, koptō - hit | martius (lat.) : warlike, fighting; March

dsc_4230_1.jpg

This female discovered an old dead tree that was blown down by the winds. She flew off the tree and began to actively peck and peel off the bark, which was already quite fragile and brittle. The bird knows that under the dead trees there are a large number of insects and their larvae.
And under the bark of this tree, she found a large number of ants. Ants are one of the favorite foods of woodpeckers in the spring season.
