🦉 The Eurasian nuthatch or wood nuthatch (Sitta europaea asiatica )
- Sitta sittē (Greek) mentioned by Aristotle and other ancient Greek. by the authors of the bird, something similar to the woodpecker
- europaea (lat.) European
- asiatica (lat.) Asian
These are such amusing little creatures; I love watching them. It’s also very easy to do, as they aren’t afraid of people—especially in city parks where there are bird feeders. In such places, these birds become so accustomed to humans that you can feed them right out of your hand. They get so comfortable around people that they might even take a treat and start hiding it in the folds of your jacket, your pockets, or even your hat.
In the wild, they move with great agility and speed along tree trunks, stashing away food for later. Remarkably, they actually remember where they’ve hidden their supplies. However, they don’t always get to eat these stores, as other birds often discover them.
