๐Ÿฆ‰ The European pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca)

  • Ficedula fi cedulinus (medieval lat.): โ€œA small bird that feeds on figs and turns into a black-headed warbler in winter โ€(from: Jobling, 2010)
  • hypoleuca hypoleucos Greek: hypo below, a little, leukos white, hypoleukos whitish

These insectivorous birds inhabit forests; I have encountered them in both mixed and coniferous woodlands. Furthermore, while walking through the city in the spring, I sometimes hear them in residential courtyards. They nest in old, abandoned woodpecker hollows, natural crevices in trees, and even under the eaves of houses.

As you might guess, it feeds on insects, spiders, and larvae. Moreover, despite its name, it actually prefers not to catch insects in mid-air, but rather to glean them from surfaces. In the autumn, it adds berries to its diet.
