Previously I posted a link to BreakoutEDU. This site describes itself as an "Immersive learning games platform". I would sum it up as an open-source, mobile escape room with an entire catalog of user-built escape games. The goal of these escape games is to provide learning combined with puzzle solving.
I should clarify that I have not yet purchased a package, but I've researched about it and am definitely thinking about making the purchase. I could use it both in my teaching and my wife could use it as well. Plus my daughter has been requesting an escape room event for her birthday coming up in a few months. I was originally thinking about buying some locks and containers and doing it myself, but to be able to purchase a built up kit that has a whole suite of boxes, locks and even the dreaded black light I may be saving money by buying the full package.
With the kit, one has all the tools to build a portable challenge. The next issue is what puzzles should you use. BreakoutEDU has a platform for submitting and searching for games and they boast over 500 games in their system. Odds are you'll find a game in whatever you teach. If you make your own, you can enter it into their system to share with others. You need to log in to browse the game catalog, but you don't need to pay anything if you just want to browse. They offer a few free games to see how it works, but you'll need to purchase a license if you want to see every game. If you buy their kit, you'll get a year worth of access included in the purchase.
I've reviewed the computer science ones and the free samples include support for learning binary and some of the other basic computer science principles. I am definitely curious to see the other games.
I was introduced to the site and the general concept by an early Room Escape Diva's Podcast. They interviewed Scott Nicholson of Brantford Games Network Lab. He has a focus on "Changing the World through Games and Play" which strongly resonated with me. I love trying to figure out how to use games for learning and make it fun in the process.
That is all I have for now. If I do buy the kit, I will make another post and maybe even an unboxing.
