Yesterday I set my crayfish trap down in a creek near our house. Since it is February 9th I didn't expect to catch very many of them on the first day. This is the spot on the creek where I set my trap out.
I found a nice rocky place in some slowly moving water which is a great place for catching crayfish.
I also made a bait box and put in a piece of bone with some meat on it and put it all in the trap.
After tying a string around the cage so I could pull the trap back in and so I could anchor it to the ground I was ready to throw it into the creek.
24 hours later and I am back at the creek expecting at least one or two crayfish but to my disappointment the trap was empty. I think that the two main reasons I didn't catch anything is because of my bait and the water temperature. The bait that the crayfish like best is fish and I have heard of several people who use hotdogs as bait. I am going to try to catch a couple of fish and cut them up and then put them in the bait box. Since it supposed to rain over the weekend it might be a couple of weeks before the creek goes down enough to reset the trap and do another update post.
