But really, I want to mark this occasion by reviewing a few of my favorite quotes from the movie "V For Vendetta.":
"Spare the rod, spoil the child"
- This movie takes place in the future, and maybe this line is a shout out to the culture that seems to have developed with the current generation of youth growing up right now? Just a theory. Don't spoil kids!
"People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people."
- The people have power in numbers. If the people stand united, then government would have to resort to overt oppressive measures to control the people.
"Our job is to report the news, not fabricate it. That’s the government’s job."
- What happens when truth is taken out of the equation and the only word getting out is what someone else wants you to hear? Censorship breeds propaganda which breeds ignorance.
"My dad used to say artists use lies to tell the truth while politicians use them to cover the truth up."
- Dwell on that for a moment. How does a satirical movie or an article use humor to show a truth? How do politicians use lies to deflect their own shortcomings? There's a lot of truth in that quote.
"Beneath this mask is more than flesh. Beneath this mask is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bullet proof."
- Ideas can change, be debated and improved upon. They are much harder to kill. When groups adopt the same idea, it can become a movement.
Remember: everyone has a story to tell. Only by taking the time to understand another person's perspective will we be able to put aside our differences and defend ourselves from those who try to divide us and control us.
