With thearrivalofsmartgrideraandtheadventofadvancedcommunicationandinformationinfra-
structures, bidirectionalcommunication,advancedmeteringinfrastructure,energystoragesystemsand
home areanetworkswouldrevolutionizethepatternsofelectricityusageandenergyconservationatthe
consumption premises.Coupledwiththeemergenceofvehicle-to-gridtechnologiesandmassivedis-
tributed renewableenergy,thereisaprofoundtransitionfortheenergymanagementpatternfromthe
conventionalcentralizedinfrastructuretowardstheautonomousresponsivedemandandcyber-physical
energy systemswithrenewableandstoredenergysources.Underthesustainablesmartgridparadigm,
the smarthousewithitshomeenergymanagementsystem(HEMS)playsanimportantroletoimprove
the efficiency,economics,reliability,andenergyconservationfordistributionsystems.Inthispaper,a
brief overviewonthearchitectureandfunctionalmodulesofsmartHEMSispresented.Then,the
advancedHEMSinfrastructuresandhomeappliancesinsmarthousesarethoroughlyanalyzedand
reviewed.Furthermore,theutilizationofvariousbuildingrenewableenergyresourcesinHEMS,
including solar,wind,biomassandgeothermalenergies,issurveyed.Lastly,varioushomeappliance
scheduling strategiestoreducetheresidentialelectricitycostandimprovetheenergyefficiency from
powergenerationutilitiesarealsoinvestigated.
