Yes, this is a very melancholy poem, and it is in fact a reflection (an extended metaphor) on depression and how it makes you feel, inspired by Antony Gormely's ‘Another Place’ sculpture instillation on crosby beach which is only about 5 miles away from where I live.
I guess after the iron men being melted in rivulets of fire, they are just like the phoenix, burnt but re-born.
Yes, that is exactly what I felt as I wrote that part, and in fact that is the hope of going through depression, that sometimes we emerge stronger, changed, re-forged 🙂
The final lines are also some of my favourites and they encapsulate how I felt writing this poem when I was in a strong depression. It is a poem that was written a while ago, and re-written and edited recently.
