Today I’d like to share with you this analysis of “A Story About Love” by the writer and psychoanalyst Jorge Bucay. Through parables and therapeutic stories, he conveys psychological and philosophical lessons in a simple and direct way—something that has really caught my attention and made me want to keep following his stories.

The story is about a couple who give up what they individually value most in order to buy a gift for each other. Today, due to consumer culture, relationships are often approached from a cost-benefit perspective. Unlike the protagonists of this story, who give of themselves without expecting anything in return, there is a problem: they are codependent, which means they need to sacrifice themselves to feel valuable or worthy of love. Their self-worth is rooted in self-sacrifice. What they don’t realize is that this self-sacrifice without prior communication can lead to an ironic outcome… I invite you to read about it in this article

One could say that a healthier way to navigate romantic relationships today is to replace sacrifice with conscious generosity, to communicate assertively to avoid emotional guesswork, and to enjoy each other’s company rather than trying to control the outcome. The idea is to give from a place of abundance and genuine desire, and to clearly express needs and boundaries. Love doesn't require the other person to read our minds. It means accepting the other person as an independent individual without turning them into a personal project that we have to mold or suffer because of.

A STORY ABOUT LOVE
It’s about two beautiful young people who became a couple when she was thirteen and he was eighteen. They lived in a small logging town nestled against a mountain. He was tall, slender, and muscular, having learned to be a lumberjack from childhood. She was blonde, with hair so long it reached her waist; she had beautiful, marvelous blue eyes.

The story goes that they had been dating with the whole town’s support. Until one day, when she was eighteen and he was twenty-three, the entire town agreed to help them get married. They were given a cabin, along with a plot of land with trees so that he could work as a lumberjack. After they got married, they moved there to live, much to the delight of everyone—the couple, their family, and the townspeople, who had played such a big part in bringing them together.

And they lived there through the days of a winter, a summer, a spring, and a fall, thoroughly enjoying their time together. As their first anniversary approached, she felt she had to do something to show him how deeply she loved him. She thought of giving him a gift that would express this. A new axe would be too work-related; a knitted sweater didn’t quite convince her either, since she had already knitted him sweaters on other occasions; a meal wasn’t a grand enough treat...

She decided to go down to town to see what she could find there and began walking through the streets. However, no matter how far she walked, she couldn’t find anything important enough that she could buy with the coins she had been saving for weeks—the change from her shopping—thinking that her anniversary was approaching.

As he walked past a jewelry store—the only one in town—he saw a beautiful gold chain on display in the window. Then he remembered that there was only one material object that he truly cherished, that he considered valuable. It was a gold watch that his grandfather had given him before he died. Ever since he was a child, he had kept that watch in a suede case, which he always left by his bed. Every night, he would open his nightstand, take that watch out of the suede pouch, polish it, wind it up a little, listen to it until the mainspring ran out, polish it again, stroke it for a while, and put it back in the case.

She thought, “What a wonderful gift this gold chain would be for that watch.” She went inside to ask how much it cost, and when she heard the answer, a wave of anxiety swept over her. It was much more money than she had imagined—much more than she had been able to save. She would have had to wait three more anniversaries to be able to buy it. But she couldn’t wait that long.

She left town feeling a little sad, wondering what she could do to get the money she needed for this. Then she thought about getting a job, but she didn't know how; and she thought and thought, until, as she walked past the only hair salon in town, she saw a sign that read: “We buy natural hair.” And since she had that blonde hair—which she hadn't cut since she was ten—it didn't take her long to go inside and ask.

No dudó.

The money they were offering her was enough to buy the gold chain, with enough left over for a box to keep the chain and the watch in. She didn't hesitate. She asked the hairdresser:
• If I come back in three days to sell you my hair, would you buy it from me?
• Of course, came the reply.
• Then I'll be back in three days.

No dijo nada.

She went back to the jewelry store, put the necklace on hold, and returned home. She didn’t say a word. On their anniversary, the two of them hugged each other a little tighter than usual. Then he left for work, and she went down to town. She had her hair cut very short, and after collecting her change, she headed to the jewelry store. There, she bought the gold chain and the wooden box. When she got home, she cooked dinner and waited for the afternoon to roll around—the time when he usually came home.

Unlike other times, when she would light up the house when he arrived, this time she dimmed the lights, lit just two candles, and tied a scarf around her head. Because he loved her hair, too, and she didn’t want him to realize she’d cut it. There would be time later to explain it to him. He arrived. They hugged each other tightly and told each other how much they loved one another. Then she pulled the wooden box containing the gold watch chain from under the table. And he went over to the wardrobe and took out a very large box that he had brought there while she was away. The box contained two enormous combs that he had bought... by selling Grandfather’s gold watch.

Reflexion:
Jorge Bucay

Reflection:
If you believe that love is sacrifice, please don't forget this story. Love isn't within us so that we can sacrifice ourselves for another, but so that we can enjoy their existence.
