This post goes for #AmazingNature Thematic Challenge. The weekly theme was: Roads, with a specific commentary: its about the roads and corridors created in wood, by the living creatures.

Sounds like an intresting topic to me, besides that I am always fascinated with stuff like that, and already have been captured stuff like that a few times, i.e. I can simply dig in my archives, no need to go out. So here we go!

For me, it is definitely one of amazing masterpieces created by Mother Nature.
I dont have a certain link saved in my bookmarks... but wood is not the only place where things like that happen. The other stuff is the sand. And I do remember a fantastic blog about that, created by keuudeip@keuudeip - which pushed me to look into his blog more, and soon made us friends.

But I do not live at the seaside and cannot do any photo-research in this field (pretty sadly). But at my location I have forests and wood, as well. And thus I have something to present.

The "doors" (entrance holes) made in the bark are impossible to notice, but if the bark has dried and peeled off, these holes are much more noticeable. And the exits (see photo above) - can be noticeable due to the trail consisting of discarded sawdust. Imagine how much larvae habitat this tree, judging by the amount of sawdust (below)!

These drawings remind me of the skeletons of either fish, or some other ancient, extinct species unknown to mankind.

They also may resemble a bone of an ancient lizard itself.

They also resemble mysterious ancient writings that cannot be deciphered.

You may ask me: but who exactly leaves such mysterious traces? Oh, it's impossible to say for sure, this niche in nature is overflowing, there is never a shortage of habitants who want to settle upon this free rooms. Those who are hiding there are very mysterious tenants, and they have organized a very secluded dwelling for themselves, really well hidden from prying immodest eyes.

Human person probably is not in a position to ask such a question. But there are some top-class specialists in nature. For example, I have met such an amazing insect several times: the parasitic wasp Ephialtes the Emperor. It has a distinctive appearance, and I could easily identify my find.

I can verbosely describe what it can do, but you'd better watch the video below, everything is shown in detail and clearly in it (the video does not belong to me, just found it on YT for this post). The short version is like that: the wasp finds a larva gnawing wood and hiding in the depths of a trunk, makes a sniper shot - drills a hole, inserts her ovipositor into it, paralyzes the victim and lays her larva next to it. Nice, isn't it?

Nature is competition and struggle .... it never stops, you cannot feel safe anywhere, even if you are hiding in the trunk of a thick tree.

I am willing to add one more part as a bonus, to entertain you and to boast my identification skills. This time it was easy, as the creature has very distinctive outlook. This is one of the creatures to blame for said wormholes (although her patterns and labyrinths dont look like the ones on the pictures above).

Carpenter moths. Theres a family of nocturnal butterflies called Cossidae. Adults do not feed on anything, they have an atrophied tube and their only function is to reproduce. Its large larvae feed on old, moist wood. They remain hidden under the bark of the trees throughout their youth period, which can last sometimes more than three (!) years. This caterpillar is a larvae of Cossus Cossus, or Goat moth.

Its a dangerous caterpillar, and its considered to be pest: if it multiplies and attacks your orchard, then this means a certain death of your entire garden within 1-2 seasons.
