I know of several natural garnet occurrences in Montana, they are just everywhere! Idaho is a great place to prospect. I have always wanted to go to the Royal Peacock Opal Mine there and dig for black opals. I think its $50 per day to dig, but you can find some serious opals that are worth a mint!
