After having reading richardalexis@richardalexis' and iikrypticsii@iikrypticsii's posts about Rocket League Sideswipe a little while back I decided to give it a go. The game looked great and I really liked Rocket League when I played it for a bit back in the day. This is probably the first mobile game I've played in almost half a year.

Rocket League

Still Rocket League?

The thing I was the most curious about when I started the game was how similar or different it would be to the orignal Rocket League. Turns out it's pretty much the same game with a few differences.

  • The game is a sice scroller with 3D sprites instead of a full 3D game.
  • Boost recharged automatically instead of having to find refills.
  • The goal is elevated off the ground as to not make it to easy to score.

Apart from this it's still the same game. You can jump and do a flip jump to shoot the ball and you can fly around boosting like crazy to score some wild goals. The premise of the game is also still the same; get the ball in the opponents goal.

That's pretty much the info you get during the tutorial. The interesting stuff comes after the tutorial when you get to access the game.

Three games modes, all fun!

The game currently has three game modes. There's the duel mode which has you dueling it out with one other opponent. It's a 1v1! There's the doubles mode which is a 2v2 and there's the hoops mode which is another 2v2 but you gotta score into a basketball kind of goal instead of into a soccer kind of goal.

All of these game modes are ranked as well so you start out unranked and after a few matches you'll get ranked into Bronze 1. From there on out it's all about winning matches to rank up. Looks like it goes up to Bronze 5 before you'll be in the Silver league. I've only made it to Bronze 4 in one of the game modes so far while the rest is sitting at Bronze 3.

Cosmetics and rocket pass!

As in the original Rocket League there's a ton of cosmetics to be collected. There's cars, wheels, booster trails, goal scoring effects, tops for your car, profile pictures and emblem designs. These are acquired from doing a free daily draw from the ingame store or they can be bought with premium currency.

There's also a battle pass, called the Rocked Pass, which appears to be free for the time being. I suspect this will change for the future. This has a ton of ranks that you unlock by gaining experience, which you get from playing matches, and each rank contains a new cosmetic. I've gottan to around rank 13 in the Rocket Pass now and it's gotten me two new cars and a bunch of lesser stuff so far.

I was never one for battle passes but as long as the Rocket Pass only gives you cosmetics, which it seems to do, it doesn't bother me. I can just choose to not buy it and that's exactly what I'm gonna do.

Well, is it fun?

Yes, the game is a whole load of fun. The first evening I played it I could barely put it down which meant I went to sleep about an hour later than normal. When you're on a winning spree you don't want it to stop and when you loose you're after revenge. Can't end the evening on a loss! It's a slippery slope when you have that mentality for sure.

What I really liked is that it's easier to get good at this game that the original Rocket League. The original game requires a huge amount of coordination and most of the time I was flying around like an idiot without even hitting the ball. Having to think in only two dimensions makes it a lot easier which in return makes it a lot more fun to me.

What I don't like is, well, that it's a mobile game with mobile game controls. All games like these which are played in real time always hurts my fingers after a while. I'm also not so good at coordinating where my fingers are and where to press when there's not a physical button I can feel after. Minor issues that's related to myself and not the game at all.

My absolute favorite thing about the game is that matches last only two minutes. Sometimes more if there's a lot of goals scores as the timer stops for a few seconds when that happens. That means you can quickly pick up this game and have just that little bit of fun you need while waiting for something. It doesn't matter if you're waiting for five minutes or an hour.

What sucks though is when you're as good as me people in the Bronze league forfeit the match when they're 4-0 down...

Conclusion

I'm having a load of fun with this game and I'm gonna keep on having a load of fun with it. I would definitely recommend giving this a go if you have a phone that can handle it. It's free for everyone and the only things you'll ever need to pay for are purely cosmetical. As far as I know it's available for both iOS and Android so go check it out!
