I was reading a post by @emiliorios a couple of hours ago, and it left me thinking about how important this topic is: "The Importance of Being Present."
When most of your family and closest loved ones are out of the country, life begins to be structured through a screen. It’s not a choice; it's the map we've had to navigate in these times.
And we learn to live with that strange duality: the phone becomes the indispensable bridge that spans the geographical abyss, but at the same time, it acts as a constant reminder of everything we're missing.
It will never be the same. No high-definition video call can replace a hug in the kitchen, a coffee shared without rush, or the comfortable silence of sitting in the same room without the obligation of having to say anything. The body has its own language, and physical closeness has a texture that no pixel can entirely replicate.
However, when the screen is all you have, the relationship either reinvents itself or simply fades away.
With distance, relationships take on very different forms. On one hand, there are the daily dynamics that adapt to the distance; on the other, there is the beautiful exception: my two best friends, with whom the story is completely different. Through that little digital window, we tell each other everything, we constantly dive deep into our lives, and there is no room for empty or filler conversations.
With them, the screen has never been a barrier to true intimacy; on the contrary, it has become the safe territory where we maintain an unbreakable bond, where we read between the lines, and where physical distance loses weight because our emotional connection is completely intact.
But it doesn't always happen that way. Distance also tests the fragility of what we used to be. My ex-boyfriend moved to Italy in search of better opportunities in 2019, and for a while, we kept in touch.
At first, we talked daily, twice a day. Then the calls and messages started to space out; they weren't as frequent anymore. For two years we stayed in touch via video call and audio messages, but nowadays we barely speak. The "I love yous" and "I miss yous" silently turned into likes on social media photos or reactions to WhatsApp statuses.
It's proof that, without presence and without a genuine effort from both parties, the virtual bridge ends up becoming a dead file.
With the rest of our distant loved ones, it's very easy to fall into that same trap: stretching the threads of contact until it becomes a simple obligation. A quick end-of-day check-in just to fulfill the fact of knowing the other person is still there, while the mind is divided between the video call and household chores.
How do you manage to maintain warmth when the medium is so cold by nature? The answer changes depending on the person and the type of relationship, but it always demands a genuine intention:

Break the script with those who take more effort: Stop talking only about the superficial to try to rescue the essence, or simply learn to sit in silence sharing a coffee through the camera, replicating a bit of that daily companionship that distance snatched from us.
I think we must accept the limitation without guilt: We have to recognize that technology has an invisible ceiling. It gives us voice, it gives us image, it allows us to see smiles thousands of kilometers away, but it doesn't hug. Accepting this reality frees us from the frustration of pretending that a phone can substitute what only the body can touch.
Protect the space: When I decide to video call, I try to turn off autopilot. Look into the eyes through the camera, pay genuine attention, and allow the other person to feel that, at least for a while, there is nothing more important happening in my world.
I don't have the option of physical closeness with most of my loved ones, but I do have the absolute capacity to care for the bond with what is available. Technology is simply the support; the warmth, the affective memory, and the tireless effort to keep belonging to each other's lives are things we bring from this side of the camera.
