Since we already knew how to raise piglets and prepare them for selling, let me now discuss to you how profitable raising piglets are. I hope this will give you ideas on other avenues of getting an income out from our own backyard.
I will just tackle with realistic figures here. Let us just site a one mother pig with 13 piglets as our sample. That's the average number of piglets that we could have if the female pig is just a first time mother. ;) Though sometimes, a female pig might bore more or less than that number, but let us just stick to that average number of piglets and let us deemed that these computations are based on a successful pregnancy of the female pig.
Let us begin with our overview computation!
It is imperative to include first in our computation all the expenses we could incurred for making the female pig pregnant.
Hiring a male pig to make love to a female pig ( Casta/Pabulog/Pabarako in our language) will cost 700 pesos (around $14). In case on the 20th day and the Casta is not successful, we can repeat the Casta process but we will no longer pay anything .
Then we will spend 1,170 pesos (or around $24) of sack of feeds per month for the mother/female pig. That's a total of 4,680 pesos or $96 for 4 sack of feeds for 4 consecutive months.
We will also spend 2 kilos of multi vitamins (ATOVI feed premix powder) for the mother pig for 4 consecutive months. One kilo will cost 550 pesos ( $11), so it will leads us to 1,100 pesos ( $22).
Then let us now jump on the expenses for piglets.
On the third or fourth day, after piglets are born, iron vitamins injection will cost 20 pesos ($ .41). Since there are 13 piglets, we will have a total iron vitamins injection of 260 pesos (13x20) or ($5.31).
To make piglets grow bigger, we will spend booster feeds. Booster feeds will cost 100 pesos per kilo. One kilo of booster feeds will last for 1 week for all those 13 piglets. You can add another kilo of booster feeds for those piglets which are not as big as the other. It is safe to have 2 kilos reserve booster feeds for all those number of piglets. 2 kilos of booster feeds will cost 200 pesos ( estimated around $4).
After all the booster feeds are consumed, then we will spend pre-starter feeds, and it will cost 50 pesos per kilo, that is enough for those 13 piglets. That one kilo of pre starter feeds will only last for 2 days for that number of piglets. In our experience, it is advisable to stock 5 kilos of pre starter feeds during the 30 days period of those piglets until the day it can be disposed. 250 pesos ($5+) will be the total amount we will spend for pre-starter.
Next expenditure is about kapon ( circumcision of male piglets), kapon will cost 10 pesos ( $ .21)per piglet. Based on our example we have only two male piglets, that means we will spend only 20 pesos ( $ .41) for such process.
Together with kapon, we will also incurr cost for another set of vitamins. These vitamins will cost 10 pesos each ($ .21). For 13 piglets we will spend a total of 130 pesos ($2.65).
Then before 1 month the anti cholera injection is given. Each anti-cholera injection will cost 20 pesos ( $ .41) or a total of 260 pesos ($5.31) for the 13 piglets.
That's all the cost that we will incurred.
Now if the time has come and we will able to sell all those piglets, each piglets can now be sold at 2,000 pesos each ( $ 41). Since we have 13 piglets the total amount we can sell them is at 26,000 pesos ($531).
Please note that all the convertion rate were based at current exchange of 49 pesos to $1.
Add all those expenses and less them to our gross sale will give us our profit. And that profit is just from only 1 female pig and 13 piglets.
I know you might be having hard time imagining the sales, expenses and profit, so I prepared a visual summary of all of them.
That's our sample profit computation for selling piglets based on 1 female and 13 piglets only. What if we have two, three or four female pigs and with the same average number of piglets? Then our profit will be doubled, tripled or quadrupled if we will raise them and sell them all at the same time. For me, that would be good enough source of other income. Isn't it?
