There was a particular event we organised a few months ago. Just few minutes to when the event would start, the sound system went off. Everyone was thrown into panic mode, and running here and there. But I noticed that our Head of Department was so calm. So after a while of thinking, he placed a call to some sound engines, who came and set up a backup system. The event later started successfully and ran well with just a little delay in starting. His calmness was what brought about the solutions. If he had joined others to panic and run around, the situation would have become worse. When faced with these challenges, a lot of people react out of emotions, they panic, become overwhelmed, and may even make some very irrational decisions. However, a very important proof of your maturity and your strength is to remain calm even when the situations seem difficult. You have to understand that staying calm does not mean that you are ignoring the problem, nor does it mean that you are pretending that the problem does not exist. But it means maintaining a clear thought, emotional stability and balance, and self-control when challenges comes your way. This is strength. You will be surprised how a lot of people think that strength only refers to physical powers, influence, or authority, but they also tend to forget emotional strength. Someone who is able to maintain calmness in the face of pressure will be able to handle challenges better than someone who always rushes to make impulsive decisions. In fact, throwing yourself in panic mode when challenges come can make you to make a lot of mistakes. But when you learn to be calm, you will be able to think clearly and make better decisions. This also explains why you hear people say "take a deep breath; calm down." Because they know that when you are calm, you will make better and more rational decisions. It is worthy to note that difficult times may require you to make careful judgement. But it is by remaining calm that will make you to make better decisions. If you allow emotions to take control of you, it may becloud and influence your sense of judgement, and may lead to poor choices, or doing things that you may regret later. However, having a calm mind will help you to evaluate the situation more objectively, and then focus more on finding a good solution for it, instead of reacting emotionally. Calmness also helps to manage stress. You may not be able to avoid the challenges of life, but it is how you respond to them that will make all the difference. The people that panic at the face of difficult situations often increase their anxiety and may even make the situation to become worse than it was. In the face of crisis, people naturally look for reassurance and stability. So when you are calm, you will tend to become a source of confidence, positive influence, and encouragement to the people around you. Your positive attitude can even help to reduce tension, and may create a better environment that will be suitable to solve the problem at hand. Calmness can also be beneficial in relationships too. A lot of conflicts and misunderstanding would be avoid if one or both parties would be able to take a pause, think, and understand before acting.
